I wanted to make you something for the holidays.
Sometimes you want to give gifts that say the thing you can’t find words for, gifts that tell your loved ones, You are seen. You are known. Sometimes the person to whom you most need to give this gift is yourself.
There are so many things about the holiday season that I love, but winter itself is another matter. I don’t look forward to the dry air, the cold in my bones that is only chased away by a long soak in the tub, the nights that elbow their way into the afternoon. I opt to stay inside where it’s cozy; I’m more drawn to naps than to adventure. Life seems to dim.
So I wrote a piece called, “Solstice”. In fact, I’ve been collecting these little story stones for some time, jingling them in my pocket and wondering just how to wrap them up for you. Just when to give them.
I’m giving some of them to you now. I’ve selected six short pieces which are stories of light in the dark. I told them to you in the dark hours while my children were sleeping. I recorded them on a disc, and I am wrapping it up with love.
Now I’m dreaming of the day it arrives in your mailbox, the moment you put it in your player and lay a soft blanket across your lap. I imagine my words spilling into your room–I dream of us being together this way, regardless of how time zones and geography appear to separate us.
This is what is really true: you are not alone. I am with you, as is the dear soul who gives this to you. You only have to listen to know it, too.
“Solstice: Stories of Light in the Dark,” an audio story collection CD, is now available for pre-order. Pre-ordered copies will be signed by the author.
