knitting babes

My latest knitting project is a doll I'm making for Amelia. The dolls are from this terrific new book called Knitted Babes. Amelia is closely monitoring my progress, and each time I work on it we talk about what part of the doll's body I'm working on. Head, neck, shoulders, and so on. It is a distinct experience from anything else I've knit, because it's like bringing someone instead of something into being. This will be my daughter's companion, the object of her love. The whole time I work on it, I can't help but dwell on Psalm 139, "You knit me together in my mother's womb." I just can't get over the tenderness of it.
