whale song

I'm still thinking about a story I heard yesterday in connection with Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori, who was elected at the General Convention last week to be the next presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church.

A scientist by background, Bishop Schori has a PhD in oceanography. At a gathering of bishops earlier this year, many were moved by (and are still talking about) a story she shared about whales and what we can learn from them about building community. Once a year, she taught, they gather together and sing each other songs. Then they go their separate ways, swim the seas for another year, and gather together again--this time with new songs for one another.

I just can't get the beauty of that out of my head.
