The Anatomy of Discovery, Part Five: Value

This week features a series of posts to unpack and unfold the anatomy, so to speak, or design of The Iconic Self Online Experience to give you a window into how it works and why it is such a distinctive offering. But these elements are also core elements of all of our Soulful Journey offerings, and things my friends and collaborators looks for as hallmarks in our own journeys of resources that we trust and ultimately rely on. Our own experiences of powerful discovery all have these things in common--so whether or not The Iconic Self Online Experience is your right thing at your right time, my hope is that this Anatomy of Discovery will regardless help light your way.

Part Five: Value

No inquiry about resources and guides would be complete without a conversation about value, which for me involves examining both investment and contribution.

The investment side of the equation is one of our primary motivations for offering the Iconic Self interactive experience online. To give you an idea of how it compares with other options, doing this work in-person would require a 5-day intensive retreat, which would cost $1000 or more, in addition to travel expenses.

And for less than the cost of hiring either Phyllis Mathis or me for two hours of our one-on-one professional services, participants in The Iconic Self Online Experience get both of us--together--for a whole month.

This means:

  • getting to ask questions and
  • to clarify in real-time
  • to contribute to a collective body of story and wisdom,
  • both in our interactive classroom and in our live conference call.

Here's how it breaks down--The Iconic Self Online Experience includes:

  • daily posts featuring reflective questions, playful exercises, and daily opportunities to interact with others on the same journey--Monday through Friday for a total of twenty days. (Value: $100+)
  • every minute of the original Iconic Self audio learning course (the content of a 5-day intensive retreat) divided into delicious bite-sized mp3 morsels  (Value: $100)
  • Phyllis and me in the house! We'll be there every day, catching stories, offering additional insights and encouragement to help along the way. (Value: $50+/day for 20 days=$1000)
  • a live conference call, mid-course, with both Phyllis and me: a time to ask questions, tell stories, and enjoy being together. (Value: $250)
  • a private Flickr group to share playful exercises, creative projects, iconic outfits, and other visual evidence of soulful risk-taking. (Bonus!)
  • The registration for this hands-on, interactive experience is just $199 (valued at $1450), and you can save an additional $50 when you register by Sunday (the 13th).

When it comes to contribution, I find it helpful to hear from other people who have already experienced the resources I'm considering and weighing. I think it best, then, to let some Iconic Self participants speak to the contribution of this offering:

    Phyllis and Jen.jpeg
"Jen and Phyllis have a way of offering practical guidance that resonates on a deep, soul level; that appeals to the parts of me that seek clarity and quality; and that sidesteps the frustrating phenomenon of self-help actually deflating my sense of okayness. I felt guided in these conversations outside of hierarchy somehow, invited to come to the table not as hungry little bird, but as respected companion."
    --Kristin Noelle
First, let me say that I'm usually highly skeptical of anyone "selling" me a way to make me "better"…my Rule of Life is that a person is exactly who they should be at the time, in order to fulfill their purpose at that moment.  But I know what a thought-full and gentle person you are, and had the sense that you wouldn't throw some schlock out on a disc just to make money.  So I was curious, and was feeling that it was time to shift some things, so why not see what you had to offer.
    aretha2.jpg
You had me at Aretha…she is my inner icon. and it blew me away when you guys mentioned that! I thought that although (in my advanced years here) I have come to terms with, and melded my inner and outer selves, there may actually be something I can learn.
And boy did I.  So far, I am recognizing that even though I had identified the "line of demarcation" between how I feel, and how I react, there were still some areas where I wasn't really being true to myself.  It's easy, I suppose, to do the hard work, then sit back with an ice tea and figure that's as far as you need to go ("you" meaning "me").  But life changes constantly, and like a computer, there are constant updates that a person needs to make in order to stay current in a Purpose.
So, I am updating my self.  And spending time in thought about what works, what doesn't work, what needs to be brought forward, and what needs to be trashed.  I am recognizing that some of the fierceness & protectiveness of my soul that I held had turned to anger & resentment.  And that needed to go.  And that being complacent and being the good girl in one particular situation was about to rob me of everything I had worked so hard to build within myself.
Your work on these discs is remarkable and wonderful.  I love the way your voice and Phyllis's voice blend - making listening not too gentle, and not too forceful. From a technical point of view, the sound is crystal clear and understandable.
You've done a good thing, here...

The Anatomy of Discovery, Part Four: Complexity and Layers

This week features a series of posts to unpack and unfold the anatomy, so to speak, or design of The Iconic Self Online Experience to give you a window into how it works and why it is such a distinctive offering. Part Four: Complexity and Layers

In these video interview outtakes, I talk about the inherent difficulty in creating concrete forms for experiential encounters and articulating complex conversations.

These clips just came to mind when I was thinking about part four of the anatomy of discovery.

Complexity and layers are good antidotes for the gimmicks and cliches we swim in all day long.

Some of the layers built into The Iconic Self Online Experience include:

    • presence
    • story
    • community
    • conversation (written, recorded audio and live call)
    • your own creativity and ingenuity
    • strong visual images and photography
    • action and application

Read  more about how these layers work together for rich interactions and deep discovery, and register before it fills up!

The Anatomy of Discovery, Part Three: The Story and Wisdom Within You

Part 3: The Stories and Wisdom Within You (A Guest Post by Phyllis Mathis)

If you’re like us, your soul is always on the lookout for good nourishment. But in this world of instant access it’s easy to fill up on superfluous noise and empty opinions. Finding what we really need, knowing what we really need, takes more than just a few clicks and a Google search. And once we get close to what we’re looking for, sifting through competing ideologies, quick fixes, and pop-psych jargon often leaves us feeling empty and exhausted.

This kind of hunger is what led Jen Lee and I to accidentally create The Iconic Self.

We weren’t looking to cook up the Next Great Thing. We simply told our stories to each other. Simply because we were friends.

In the context of deep conversation and soulful friendship we explored the threads of our own lives:

    • We found that we shared a strong need to find spiritual nourishment free from the trappings of religious ideology.
    • We discovered a mutual longing for wisdom beyond the psychotherapist’s couch.
    • We realized we were both determined to dodge the cliches of pop-psychology and make our own path.

By honoring our own experiences in the context of kindred conversation we literally stumbled into a wealth of wisdom. Wisdom that had been there all along, embedded in our own lives, ready and waiting to nourish our souls. So we took our stories - and our friendship - into the recording studio to produce The Iconic Self, with only an inkling of the power and beauty we would be unleashing:

    • Embracing the stories our bodies tell
    • Finding the courage we need in unlikely places
    • Learning to honor all our ways of knowing
    • Making a place for all our parts and pieces

The Iconic Self is powerful, not because our stories are extraordinary, but precisely because they are not. The stories themselves are merely things that happened along the way. What’s extraordinary is the way our conversation made it possible for us to see the threads of meaning in our own lives. By creating the space to listen deeply to our stories, we created a space - and a way - for you to listen to yours.

With The Iconic Self Online Experience you now have the opportunity to enter into our circle of friendship and honor the stories that have been waiting for you deep in your own soul. We’ll help you listen, help you spot the gold, and help you find the courage to be the soul you were always meant to be.

Please join us February 4th through March 1st at Live it to the Full.

The Anatomy of Discovery, Part One: Bridge

    Part One: Bridge

The first element of discovery is really structural in nature--skeletal, one might say. It involves building a bridge between two banks:

    • understanding and living
    • good ideas and practice
    • concept and experience

Too much of what we come across or try to learn from leaves us on that first bank, building up a head full of knowledge that somehow still never manages to change the game.

There are so many good ideas and interesting concepts "out there" to toy with, but increasingly I have little patience for things that stop short of the rigor to even inquire how to translate those things into a new experience, practice, or way of life. Concepts and ideas alone, without a process of translation and integration, have an insufficiency to them that no longer holds my attention.

    • Yes, we say, we would LOVE to have a peaceful relationship with our bodies--it's the finding a way in that's hard
    • Of COURSE it would be great to be in touch with our intuition and know how to follow it--it's the How that everyone is so vague about
    • It's not far-fetched that we hold the worst of ourselves at bay, but what if we're withholding our best? How do we dare the minefield to recapture our hidden treasures? How do we know in which direction to look?

In The Iconic Self Online Experience, discover:

  • the way in
  • the How
  • the daring and the direction
  • Join Us: The Iconic Self Online Experience

What IS The Iconic Self, anyway? Watch the brand-new, 3-minute interview above to find out more.

Though this ground-breaking work has been years in the making, Phyllis Mathis and I have taken our time translating The Iconic Self into an online experience, primarily because two vital ingredients for the transformational power of this journey are presence and conversation. Early feedback of other online courses was fraught with disappointment in these two areas--primarily with the absence of instructors' presence and participation in any conversation resulting from the material offered.

We are the first to argue for the power of in-person, immersive learning experiences like the retreats we've shared previously. But up against the limitations inherent with such gatherings, we looked for new ways to share this journey in a way that remains infused with presence and conversation.

First, we went into a professional recording studio and shared the personal stories and hard-won insights that both form The Iconic Self and invite listeners around the world into this unique path--neither therapeutic or expressly spiritual in nature, and yet a welcoming and inclusive in-road to the process of soul integration.

Having this content in the realm of voice--physical voice--brings listeners right into the room with us. It expands our circle of friendship into an open embrace. It adds a layer of humanity, expression and depth beyond what's possible through the written word alone.

We were delighted to share the audio learning program with you, as well as the home retreat kit designed to support your journey wherever you are, around the world.

Then in the last several months, Phyllis partnered with Live It to the Full to author and craft online experiences infused with her presence in the virtual classroom and a culture of conversation that extends beyond her responses to every comment and becomes contagious and fluent among the participants, as well. (If you've heard her interview on Retrospective about constituting one another in conversation, you already know this is a core value for her.)

Now, equipped with both a presence- and conversation-rich audio program AND a presence- and conversation-infused virtual classroom model (which includes a live, recorded conference call), we invite you to join us for The Iconic Self Online Experience. You can read all about it here, and register before the maximum capacity fills (only 25 participants). Our availability for live events is limited this season, but we crave your company and companionship as we sink deeply into the journey that changed everything for us. Please join us!

We are also thrilled to feature photography by Bella Cirovic throughout The Iconic Self Online Experience.
